Treat Stretches
An easy way to start stretching your horse is by using food
or treats to stretch his neck, shoulders, and back. Hold a
bend his neck to get the treat. This will stretch his neck and
shoulders. Hold a treat out in front of the horse encouraging
him to stretch his head and neck forward to reach the treat
without moving his feet. This will stretch the poll, neck, and
throat latch. Then move the treat back towards the horse’s
front legs, eventually moving the treat between his legs
towards his back end. This continues the stretch of the neck
and back muscles.
It may take time for your horse to be able to stretch around
to his girth, or down between his legs; but if you do these
stretches regularly you will see a gradual progression of
muscle lengthening as the horse becomes more flexible and
supple.
