HOW OFTEN SHOULD
MY HORSE GET A
SPORTS MASSAGE?
This depends on several factors.  The horses age, the
workload and training level, any injury or illness, general
soundness, attitude, saddle fit problems and overall goals for
the horse are some of the things to be considered when
deciding how often to have your horse massaged.

Often I like to do up to three massages in a short time period,
no more than one month, if there are specific problems that
are being addressed with the horse.  This lets myself and the
owner see if the massage therapy is going to be effective or
beneficial for a specific problem.  If after three massages
there is not a significant improvement in the issues being
targeted, then a veterinarian, farrier, or dentist should be
consulted.

Most of my clients whose horses are showing or being ridden
regularly can be maintained on a schedule of a massage every
4 to 6 weeks.  Horses in heavy training and showing can be
massaged more frequently depending on their individual needs.

Horses that are pasture pets, or retired and are not being
used regularly may only need massage during times of stress
or injury rehabilitation.

Horses that are occasionally or lightly ridden can often be
maintained by being massaged every 2 to 3 months.

I rely on the horse’s owner to let me know when the horse
needs a massage.  I do not believe there is one schedule that
fits every horse.  Horses respond so favorably to sports
massage therapy that the owner becomes very aware of when
their horse needs to be massaged again.  I work with the
owner to come up with a schedule that is beneficial for the
horse and fits the owner’s budget!
