Can Sports Massage
Therapy Help a Horse That
"ties up"?
Yes.  Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, often referred to as “tying
up”, is a very painful condition that can be addressed in part
with sports massage therapy.

Sports massage therapy can alleviate the SYMPTOMS, but
the underlying cause still needs to be addressed by a
veterinarian.

ANY TIME YOU THINK YOUR HORSE IS TYING UP YOU
SHOULD FIRST CALL A VETERINARIAN!!!

This condition can have very serious effects on your horse’s
health, and can even cause death in some cases if left
untreated by a veterinarian.

That being said, there are massage strokes that can be used
to help relax the muscle spasms and promote the body’s
excretion of the toxic substances that collect in the muscle
tissue.  This is especially true of the large muscle groups in
the hip and gluteus areas of the horse.  Regular massage
can help horses that are prone to, or have a history of, tying
up by keeping the muscles supple and aiding in the excretion
of the toxins that build up in the muscle bodies.
