My Horse is on Stall
Rest, will a sports
massage benefit him?
Yes. Horses that are on stall rest due to an injury often
suffer from a variety of problems caused by their
confinement.
Sports massage therapy is a form of anaerobic exercise for
the muscles in the body helping to slow the atrophy that
occurs when the horse is on stall rest.
Sports massage increases blood flow in the horse’s body
which increases the amount of oxygen that is circulated in
the blood to help heal the injury. Decreased circulation can
be especially problematic in the legs and feet of a stall
bound horse. This increase in blood flow helps reduce
swelling and can reduce the effects of the limited movement
the horse has.
Sports massage can also help the horse’s attitude, in some
cases reducing or eliminating destructive and harmful stall
vices that can manifest in a horse on strict stall rest.
