How long will the
sports massage take?
The massage takes about one hour generally. The first
time I come out to work on your horse I like to see the
horse ridden or lunged, or at a minimum watch them
being lead in hand. This allows me to see how the
horse moves prior to the massage work.
If the horse is nervous or tentative I take more time to
develop trust and acceptance in the horse prior to
proceeding on to more aggressive muscle work. This
means the first massage may take more than one hour.
I usually say you should have about 1 ½ hours set aside
for the first massage.
After the sports massage, it is very important that your
horse be lightly exercised for about 10 minutes. The
easiest way to do this is to just walk your horse on a
lead line, but you can lunge, long line, or ride your horse
if you want. The light exercise helps the horse's body to
"reset" it's muscle memory, incorporating the looser,
more supple muscle tissue. This also helps the muscle
tissue to get rid of the lactic acid and other waste
products that the massage has released.
